Primary Commodities: Apatite (Gemstones)

Location

Township or Area: Monmouth

Latitude: 44° 58' 12.04"    Longitude: -78° 17' 33.73"

UTM Zone: 17    Easting: 713488   Northing: 4983185    UTM Datum: NAD83

Resident Geologist District: Southern Ontario

NTS Grid: 31D16NW

Point Location Description: Precise

Location Method: Data Compilation

Access Description: In the southwest corner of the lot are several pits and an adit, all of which are overgrown with vegetation. The adit is driven north into the side of a hill for a length of 30 feet. Ten chains north of the road, near the top of a hill, a trench 45 ft. and 4 to 5 feet wide and 8 ft. deep was put down on a carbonate vein cutting a graphic granite-pegmatite.

Exploration History

1900: The mine was worked around 1900. There are several pits and an adit. The deposits were worked about 1900 and the apatite crystals were hand-cobbed for shipment. There is no recorded production 1979: Imperial Oil Limited - conducted a geological and radiometric survey for uranium. 1981: Some blasting had taken place. 1993-1998: Sharpmin Developments Inc. Stripping, sampling, trenching, geological mapping and prospecting.

Lithology Comments

Jan 29, 2017 (A Wilson) - This deposit was at one time worked for apatite, and a considerable quantity of this mineral was taken out. The pegmatite dike or vein, here, cuts a banded quartzite, and is for the most part rather fine in grain, although it varies greatly in size of grain from place to place. Several coarsely crystalline calcite veins containing large anhedral to euhedral crystals of biotite, hornblende, microcline, apatite and minor quartz occur on the property. In addition to these minerals, Sabina (1986) reports thorite, thorianite, uranophane, serpentine, pyroxene and chondrodite for the property.

Mineralization Comments

Jan 29, 2017 (A Wilson) - Adams and Barlow describe red and green granular apatite masses up to 1 m across and mention that considerable apatite was removed during previous mining operations.
