Geology Comments

Jan 26, 2017 (C Papertzian) - Nepheline-biotite-plagioclase gneiss, white-pink in colour, occurs in 4 well-defined localitites within this west portion of the main syenite gneiss belt. The syenite gneiss is about 6 chains wide at the southern boundary of the township, about 15 chains to the north. Along most of its length the nepheline rock lies on a footwall of hornblende syenite gneiss and is overlain by biotite gneiss. The southern-most occurrence is only a few small outcrops of a nepheline-poor biotite-syenite gneiss. The next occurrence, to the north, extends continuously for 45 chains, tapering from 4 chains at its central area to about 1 chain at each end. Nepheline ranges from sparse to 10 %. There is development of pyroxene-garnet skarn in the marble of the south part. The third occurrence lies about 7 chains to the northwest of the trail to the fire tower on Greens Mountain. This body is almost pear-shaped, 6 chains wide in the southwest and 1 chain wide in the northeast (25 chains long). This is also a nepheline-poor gniess. The northmost occurrence consists of a narrow belt of many outcrops extending for 100 chains. Nepheline rocks are found across a width of 1-2 chains, 8 chains in the S. The nepheline-poor rocks are mostly biotite-plagioclase gneisses containing sparse nepheline, though the content can vary. This is band 2 in the text.
