Apr 14, 2011 (A Wilson) - A thick sequence of varved clay occurs on the west bank of the North Muskoka River in Macaulay Township, 2 miles north of Bracebridge. The terrain is flat open farmland for 1/2-mile west of the river and for at least a mile along its length. Sampling and mapping by G. Guillet in the 1960s showed that the upper 7.5 feet of the section is comprised of thinly varved clay of which the clay fraction comprised about one-third. The middle 9 foot section of uniformly varved clay has a clay fraction of about 40%. The lower 7 foot section is composed of varved clay in couples decreasing in thickness from 1 to 1 ½ inches at the base to ½ inches at the top. Smooth brown clay comprises 25% of the unit, pale green-grey silt the rest.
