Apr 14, 2011 (A Wilson) - The deposit is described as grey-white diatomite ranging from 6 inches to 1 foot in depth occurring over 3-4 acres of high marshy ground. The material is in places mixed with sand and covered with peat and vegetable matter, but in some places comparatively clean, though somewhat gritty material may be obtained. Apr 14, 2011 (A Wilson) - The typical chemistry of the silt consists of 65.47% SiO2, 16.01% Al2O3, 5.01% Fe2O3, 3.18% CaO, 1.90% MgO, 3.08% K2O, 3.70% Na2O. Production began in 1951 on the Melissa No. l property. The lack of adequate financing forced its closure after 10 years of intermittent operation.
