Mar 12, 2013 (C Papertzian) - Samples taken by the OGS from a marble belt which runs northeasterly through NE Darling and Lanark townships. Within the marble belt are several intrusives and metadedimentary units. In the area of sample # 1704 the marble also occurs as pods and bands within amphibolite units. The marble is mostly grey with minor impurities. 2 channel samples were also taken from this area. In the area of sample # 1716 the belt is made up of interbedded amphibolite and marble with discontinuous units of schist and paragneiss. The marble is predominantly light grey with minor impurities. The colour of the marble and the presence of other units reduces the potential for use as filler.

Notes: This quarry was visited on July 25th, 2003. Omya continues to mine this deposit to feed their plant in Perth. The quarry is being expanded once again. Annual production in 2000 was 250,000 tons and quarry reserves currently stand at over 5 million tons. In 2000, a 5-year expansion program was completed at both the quarry and the plant in Perth. Calcitic marble is mined to produce high-purity, fine-grind calcite for fillers, with terrazzo chips and landscaping stone as secondary products.
