Access Description: From Bancroft drive E on Hwy 500 (28) and turn left after crossing the York River. Drive 3.5 km until the road branches and take the trail on the right (only vehicles with a high clearance can drive part of the way along the trail). It is a 25 minute walk on a blazed path. The area forms a high ridge E of the end of the York River road. The area described under the title ' East Bronson Landing Area ' is located on lot 12, con 14.

Exploration History

Mineral location (blue star corundum) and location of ' dungannonite '. c 1900 : Several pits and trenches were opened for corundum on top of the ridge. The main workings consist of 2 open-cuts on lot 12, con 14, about 1/4 ml S of the river (3 small pits to the N of this and 1 to the S). The largest is 40 x 6 x 4-5 ft deep in corundum-rich nepheline-andesine gneiss. Garnet, zircon, hornblende, biotite, apatite, muscovite, tourmaline and scapolite occur as accessories. 1965 : stripping and trenching on the E half of lot 12. 1980 : J. Ellet reports mining about 40 lbs of material (70 % crystals) and cutting about 30 stones. The Bancroft Mineral Society / Bancroft Gem and Mineral Club has rights on the property on lot 12 (W), con 14 for mineral collecting.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - Dungannonite is a corundum-bearing alkali syenite with accessory nepheline (a nepheline-poor corundum-scapolite-andesine gneiss) and it outcrops on an 80 ft high ridge on these lots. The corundum occurs in 2 parallel bands, each about 5 ft wide, and separated by about 50 ft of foliated gneiss - the nepheline-corundum gneiss units occur as relics in a ridge that is predominantly syenite and granite pegmatite. Small lenses of quartz-feldspar pegmatite occurr immediately to the W of the ridge; to the E a large, homogeneous granite pegmatite is exposed for 90 m. The corundum crystals are a semi-opaque pale blue colour and some are a rich transparent blue in the centre (fading to white or grey towards the edge). All have fine fractures, although one specimen was exhibited as a true sapphire in 1901. They can reach 3 inches in size.
