Location Method: Conversion from MDI

Access Description: The deposit is reached via the York River road from Hwy 500/28. The work carried out here was on the Great Bend nepheline syenite which is exposed on the hills on either side of the Great Bend of the York River, just N of Bronson Landing, in lots 11-17, con 13-15.

Exploration History

Early 1900s : prospecting for corundum (pits). 1946 : Gummer and Burr carried out a detailed study of the nepheline rocks of the area for the Aluminum Company of Canada Ltd and the American Nepheline Corp Ltd. Some of thieir work, largely confined to the Bancroft Nepheline Syenite Band, lots 20-30, con 11-14, would have covered this property. See MDI31F04SE00052, ' American Nepheline Corp'. 1950s : staked for uranium exploration. 1957-8 : American Nepheline Ltd (Indusmin) - R.Guillet carried out a geological survey on lots 10, 14 and 15, con 14 (considered to be part of the Great Bend Nepheline Syenite , lots 11-17, con 13-15). This is covered by AFRO # 1. 1985-9 : Jayfran Enterprises Ltd and Pipawa Explorations Ltd stripped and trenched and carried out geological, geophysical and radiometric surveys in this area (claims covered lots 16-20, cons 13 and 14). they drilled 7 holes for nepheline and 4 for uranium and outlined both a high- grade and a low- grade nepheline zone. See also MDI31F03SE00036, Jayfran-Pipawa. Ventures Ltd also operated in this area and appears to have worked closely with the Aluminum Company of Canada and the American Nepheline Corp in 1941-2.

Geological Age: Mesoproterozoic

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - Nepheline syenite gneiss is exposed on the hills on either side of the Great Bend of the York River. On the E side a hill rises 100 ft and is composed mainly of nepheline syenite with some pink leucosyenite. White nepheline-plagioclase gneiss with accessory biotite, hornblende and magnetite is the common rock type. Nepheline content is highly variable (up to 60 % nepheline, but mostly 30 %). Gneiss on the E side of the river is exposed over a width of 1,200 ft and a length of 1/2 ml. There is local corundum which is frequently rimmed by magnetite, in turn rimmed by nepheline. Marble is intercalated with the nepheline rocks in several places. American Nepheline found the units too high in lime and Fe and too variable overall.
