Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - Solid and coloured marbles from the McMillan (MacMillan), Stewart and Barker (Faraday township) quarries. The McMillan Quarry was opened across the full width of a band, 60ft wide, of medium-grained white dolomite with faint brownish and pinkish tinges. The quarry is 120 ft long x 60 ft wide and 40 ft deep. Coarser white dolomite is seen 300 ft to the E and pure white, coarse-grained dolomite is seen 200 ft N of the quarry along the railway siding (1938). There is little minor jointing, only 6m vertical joints. Horizontal partings are 3 -3.7 m apart. Colour in the Stewart and McMillan quarries include solid colours and shades of : green, pink, white, cream and blue. The quarry was sampled by the OGS in 1989 (MDC 28). Mafic dykes are reported in the marble - See also OFR 5585. The quarry is now water-filled. The marble band is not believed to be of sufficient extent to support further development.
Date: Aug 30, 2002
Geologist: C Papertzian
Notes: The property was visited on July 23rd, 2002. The quarry was very overgrown and water filled. Poor outcrop exposure limits the determination of the true extent of the marble belt. . The dolomitic marble was white to light brown in colour and tends to be fine to medium grained. The quarry is slowly being surrounded with residences.
