Exploration History

1908-30 : quarrying by J. Hoidge - one of the Ontario Marble Quarries (along with the McMillan and Barker). A mill operated on lot 30, con 10 until 1915. 1938 : quarrying continued by Rock Construction Co Ltd. 1976 : reconnaissance work by Steetley Industries Ltd. 1987 : U. Kretchmar undertook a geological survey on the property. 1989 : P.J. Lacey carried out power stripping on lot 30. The quarry lies about 3/8 ml SW of the McMillan Quarry. It is shallow, with a cut 160 ft long and 80 ft wide into the SE corner of a low marble ridge. The maximum face on the N side is about 12 ft. A second opening, 3-7 ft deep in the quarry floor (1955), measured 70 x 40 ft. Stone from here was used extensively in government buildings and large blocks appear to have been removed (6 x 5 x 5 sawn into slabs of 1 inch). A possible 30,000 tons were removed from the quarry in the early years; 1.000 tons more recently - Canada Cement Lafarge - active on demand. Blasting on close-spaced, 6 inch centres, to stope 1,000-2,000 lb blocks.

Geology

Province: Grenville

Geological Age: Mesoproterozoic

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The marble is predominantly white with light green veins and streaks (tremolite and serpentine). A 30 ft unit, fine-grained, siliceous and clouded green (serpentine and mica) was sold under the name ' Imperial Green '. Occassional narrow units of pink calcitic marble are also present in this zone. A light blue marble veined with white (120 ft unit), and a bownish-pink banded marble (33 ft unit) were also quarried. Feathery rosettes of green tremolite are common in the green marble and brown tourmaline (dravite) occurs in the micaceous facies.
