Lithology Comments

Jun 30, 2011 (A Wilson) - The nepheline-albite gneiss shows a range in composition with some bands being comprised of almost pure nepheline. The nepheline-albite gneiss occurs as a discontinuous band that ranges from 10 to 15 feet in thickness. The Klondike Diggings formed part of the Craigmont Mine. No separate details on total corundum production from these pits is available.

Mineralization Comments

Jun 30, 2011 (A Wilson) - The nepheline has been slightly altered to hydronephelite. The corundum crystals appear as clusters of crystals about ¼ inch by 1 inch, but in some places as large as 1 by 3 inches. Nepheline forms at least 60% by volume of the gneiss, and may make up to as much as 80% of the rock. Corundum is erratically distributed in the gneiss. Large green crystals of gahnite were found lining cavities in brown corundum at this site in 1896.
