Exploration History

pre-1938: originally opened for lime, and later used for sulphite pulp (for paper). 1933-44: (lot 9) acquired by Shane Lime and Charcoal Co and about 200 ft square and 9 ft deep at this time. This quarry was abandoned and in 1943 2 lime kilns divided it into 2 - the E quarry was 75 x 150 ft, exposing 7-9 ft; the W quarry was 325 x 190 ft, exposing 6-7 ft. 1960: Bonnechere Lime Co. Ltd. - (lot 8) quarry produced lime mainly for uranium mills in Bancroft. It was about 270 x 120 m and 3-5 m deep. 1971: quarry owned by S.G. Nelson. 1981: the quarry was owned by M.E. Tracey. 1989: Bromley Township - quarry (lot 8) was reopened on a demand basis for aggregate (used by the surrounding townships). A lower lift has been excavated into the quarry floor.

Lithology Comments

Jun 09, 2011 (C Papertzian) - The 8.5 m deep quarry exposes Bobcaygeon Formation limestones, possibly the lower member (due to the presence of black chert nodules). Overburden is about 1 m. Fossils include corals, gastropods, crinoids. White crystalline calcite, which fluoresces yellow, also occurs.

Mineralization Comments

Jun 09, 2011 (A Wilson) - Grab sample No 120 collected by M. Goudge in 1925 from 9 feet of the Trenton limestone returned 1.96% SiO2, 0.23% Fe2O3, 0.23% Al2O3, 0.07% Ca2(PO4)2, 94.71% CaCO3, 2.57% Mg CO3. Grab sample No. 120A, collected by M. Goudge in 1935 from the working face of the quarry returned: 2.62% SiO2, 0.22% Fe2O3, 0.56% Al2O3, 0.04% Ca2(PO4)2, 93.66% CaCO3, 2.43% Mg CO3. White crystalline calcite that fluoresces yellow occurs in the rock. Corals, gastropods, crinoids are also found here.
