Aug 23, 2011 (A Wilson) - The Black River limestone in Renfrew County has a variable composition, and variable amounts of silicified fossils and chert. The content of magnesium carbonate does not generally exceed 35 but in the outlier east of Calabogie Lake, this constituent forms as much as 25.5% of certain of the beds. The limestone of this formation has been quarried for building stone, road metal and for making lime. The limestone from the Barryvale outlier is fine-grained, light to bluish-grey, fossiliferous limestone, possibly of the Pamelia Member of the Ottawa Formation. A few thin beds of pure, very fine-grained, faintly laminated, cream-coloured lithographic limestone also have been observed.
Aug 23, 2011 (A Wilson) - Grab sample 139 was collected close to the railway at Barryvale and assayed: 2.62% SiO2, 1.25% Al2O3, 0.57% Fe2O3, 0.04% Ca2(PO4)2, 13.93% MgCO3, and 80.68% CaCO3. Sample 139A was collected from ½ mile southeast of Barryvale and assayed 3.22% SiO2, 1.68% Al2O3, 0.88% Fe2O3, 0.04% Ca2(PO4)2, 25.52% MgCO3, and 67.34% CaCO3. Sample 139B was collected from 1 mile southeast of Barryvale and assayed 3.70% SiO2, 0.43% Al2O3, 1.07% Fe2O3, 0.04% Ca2(PO4)2, 20.19% MgCO3, and 74.75% CaCO3.
