Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Gabbro 1 Gabbroic Gneissic Host
Marble 2 Dolomitic Adjacent

Lithology Comments

Aug 24, 2011 (A Wilson) - The iron-bearing formation occurs parallel to and just below the contact between hornblende gneiss and the marble. The contact strikes N40E and dips 20°W. The magnetite bodies are replacements of bands or lenses of limestone in hornblende gneiss. Most of the magnetite is confined to calcareous bands or lenses in the hornblende gneiss, a short distance below the overlying marble in a zone 10 to 15 feet thick.

Mineralization Comments

Aug 24, 2011 (A Wilson) - A grab sample collected from this site in 1914 returned: 47.70% Fe, 9.3% insoluble material, 4.2% CaO, 0.66% MgO, 0.179% P, 1.65% S. The magnetite was described as being disseminated within the host rocks with some exposures containing on the average of about 50% magnetite. The magnetite bodies are described as small, irregular lenses exposed over a length of 900 feet. A representative sample collected by Carter et al. returned 51.3% Fe, 22.1% FeO, 5.03% S, 0.04% TiO2, 0.179% P2O5, and 0.01%V. GSC Report for 1912 reports that a shipment of 3 tons of ore came from the property in 1911. The ore was tested at the GSC laboratory. No commercial production took place.
