Exploration History

Before 1911: excavation of a pit by unknown operators. 250 pounds of ore sent to Professor J.B. Porter of McGill University for concentration experiments. 1916: in production 1917: Maple Leaf Exploration Company: property optioned and continued shaft sinking; 6.2 tons of ore containing 2.19% MoS2 shipped to the Mines Branch 1.3 tons of ore containing 1.08% MoS2 shipped to the Mines Branch About 316 pounds of pure MoS2 were recovered from these shipments.

Lithology Comments

May 07, 2013 (A Wilson) - The gneiss strikes from north to N40E and dips 60SE. It contains lit par lit stringers of feldspathic material and is cut by irregular stringers and dikes of pegmatite. The walls of the pegmatite are feldspar-rich but material on the dump indicates the presence of pegmatititc quartz. The quartz vein reportedly had an average width of 5 feet. The pegmatite dike ranges from 2 to 4 feet in width.

Mineralization Comments

May 07, 2013 (A Wilson) - Both the feldspar and the quartz contain clusters of large, thin, crushed flakes of molybdenite ranging from 1-3 inches in diameter. Pyrite cube aggregates occur in vugs in the quartz and biotite books from 1-3 inches across are present in minor amounts in the feldspar. An estimate of the grade of 2 tons of concentrating ore on site in 1916 was 1% MoS2. A sample collected from the ore pile in 1916 assayed 1.61% MoS2. Satterly described the molybdenite as consisting of clusters of large, thin, crushed flakes of molybdenite that range from 1-3 inches in diameter. Pyrite cube aggregates occur in vugs in the quartz and the biotite books range from1 to 3 inches in size are present in minor amounts within the feldspar.
