Lithology Comments

Jun 09, 2011 (A Wilson) - The 2 quarries lie immediately SW of the CNR - the SE quarry is 550 x 200 ft and 18 ft deep, the NW quarry is 500 x 200 ft with 7-10 ft exposed above water (about 20 ft deep). The most easterly of the quarries exploited an 18 foot section of calcium limestone displaying beds up to 2 feet thick. The limestone is fine-grained, light brownish grey. Flat nodules of black chert and many silicified fossils are found in the top 3 feet of the quarry. Beneath this layer, the limestone is relatively pure. Veins of white calcite are present in some of the beds. A quarry is described just S of the Lutheran church, between the Bonnechere River and the road to the east of it - possibly that ascribed to Rev. P.H. Dowdall (1912). The stone here was used in construction of the bridge at Eganville and the church. It is from a higher horizon than that used in the lime kilns and turns blue then white on exposure. The quarry is 210 x 75 ft and was operated in 2 benches (2.5 and 4-6 ft), the lower being 15 ft above river level.

Mineralization Comments

Jun 09, 2011 (A Wilson) - The quarry produced white lime. The lime produced was light brownish-grey and sold as quicklime, mainly for chemical and metallurgical uses. The stone is described as suitable for heavy structural work. Grab sample No 119 collected by M. Goudge in 1925 from 15 feet of the Chazy limestone returned 2.20% SiO2, 0.51% Fe2O3, 0.41% Al2O3, 0.07% Ca2(PO4)2, 93.31% CaCO3, 2.88% Mg CO3. Grab sample No. 119A, collected by M. Goudge in 1935 from calcium limestone close to dolomitized area returned: 1.54% SiO2, 0.26% Fe2O3, 0.34% Al2O3, 0.02% Ca2(PO4)2, 95.48% CaCO3, 2.15% Mg CO3. Grab sample No. 119B, collected by M. Goudge in 1935 from dolomitized area returned: 1.78% SiO2, 3.62% Fe2O3, 0.58% Al2O3, 0.02% Ca2(PO4)2, 56.82% CaCO3, 36.39% Mg CO3.
