Circa 1965: Bonnechere Lime Ltd.: limestone quarried and mined from a 1 compartment shaft (now filled) and carried on trestle to kilns. 60,000 tons removed but about this amount lying around as broken rock.

Geology

Province: Paleozoic and Mesozoic Basins

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - The quarry is situated in the top part of the Paleozoic escarpment - Black River limestone - which runs parallel to the river. This was sampled ( # 121, 121A, 121B, 1938). See DEMR/CANNET 1938, p 166, for a description of the section. Fossils are abundant - corals, bryozoans, crinoids and shells. Crystals of white calcite in cavities (fluoresces yellow) and black and white chert.

Lithology Comments

Jun 09, 2011 (A Wilson) - The quarry lies west of the Bonnechere River road, on a 40 ft escarpment, and was connected by a tramway to the kilns. The quarry was opened in 2 benches - the lower 190 x 100 ft with a 20 ft neck for the tramway. This bench was 30 ft deep. The second bench, to the W, was 140 x 150 ft and from 10-18 ft deep. The quarry closed because this stone did not yield lime of high enough quality, however, the stone from a quarry on lot 16, con 17 was trucked here to the lime plant. The lime was marketed as quicklime, in bulk or 200 lb steel drums
