Exploration History

Mineral location : fossils (corals and shells) occur sparingly. Calcite in colourless-white aggregates are common in fractures and cavities (fluoresces pale yellow in U.V.). Powdery dolomite coats the limestone. c1938 : crushed stone for road metal was obtained from this quarry, opened in a N-facing escarpment. The quarry was triangular in plan (150 ft sides) with a 20 ft face. 1948 : Ottawa Valley Crushed Stone Ltd (a subsidiary of Canada Cement Co Ltd) began operating the quarry which produced crushed stone, mainly for concrete aggregate and roads. The quarry had a 70 ft face in 1960 (worked in 1 lift), with a further 16 ft of limestone exposed in a cut in the quarry floor. Production averaged 2,250 tons/day. 1969 : a new quarry was opened on the same property, SW of the one already described - operated by Francon Ltd. Aggregate was mainly used in concrete and asphalt and as road stone. 1989 : the quarry licence covered 100.73 ha for 2 quarries (North and South), operated by the Francon Division of Canfarge Ltd. Initially located on the outskirts of Ottawa, the quarries were, by now, completely engulfed by the city. The North quarry (1989) had been excavated on 2 lifts of 20 m - the first supplying concrete stone, the second supplying asphalt and granular base aggregates. The South quarry was also excavated on 2 lifts of 20 m, with potential for another 2, and produced mainly granular products. Excessive overburden restricted the advance of the first lift.

Geology

Province: Paleozoic and Mesozoic Basins

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - There is a 135 m thick section from the lower member, Gull River Formation, to the upper member, Bobcaygeon Formation. This is exposed as a result of several, near-vertical normal faults, and only 2 intervals (in the lower members of both Formations) have been cut out. See OGS 1991 (Limestones Industries of Ontario) for a section and lithological description.
