1893-pre1912 : Morris and Ballantyne operated the brickyard, manufacturing over 2 million red stock brick /year in 1906. 1912 : after changing hands several times, the plant was taken over by Merkley's Ltd in 1912. They started making shale brick in 1920. Products are listed as : red soft-mud brick, red wire-cut shale and clay brick, red drain tile and red hollow building tile. In 1930 the (2-level) clay pit had a 50 ft face (20 ft strong plastic clay, 20 ft of mild clay and 10 ft of blue marine clay with some shells). Below this is 2 ft of gravel on shale. Shale for the plant was drawn from 11/2 miles away. There was an extensive plant.
Dec 07, 2005 (C Papertzian) - 5 ft of red clay with about 7 ft of yellow-brown sandy clay below and then blue Leda clay below again.
