Lithology Comments

Aug 03, 2017 (A Wilson) - Keewatin volcanics and Cobalt sediments are intruded by the Nipissing diabase sill. The sill at the No. 3 shaft forms the 45º north and south dipping limbs of the west-south west trending Kerr Lake arch; the Cobalt sediments below the arch have been folded into a shallow syncline. Four silver-cobalt calcite veins (numbered 1 to 4) strike south west. Vein No.5 strikes west-northwest. Veins 1 and 2 host some native bismuth are productive only within Keewatin lavas, by contrast Nos. 3 and 4 veins with galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization only within the Cobalt Series. No. 5 vein with cobalt bloom, galena and chalcopyrite is associated with fracturing, along Keewatin chert bands. The ore zone beneath Dynamite Island – ore occurs in subvertical 350 ft long north-northwest vein over a vertical distance of 200 ft. in Keewatin volcanics to lower diabase contact above which it extends a maximum of 25 ft. in the diabase. The ore follows the contact. Two major veins were the 406 vein, which strikes parallel to the long axis of the trough and the 404 vein which strikes perpendicular to the 406 vein. The east-west trending 404 vein is nearly vertical, and continues downward into the Keewatin as a strong 4 inch-5 inch calcite vein with minor sulphides.
