Lithology Comments

Aug 02, 2017 (A Wilson) - Northwest striking Keewatin rocks, cut by Haileyburian lamprophyre dikes, are intruded by Nipissing diabase sill, about 1100’ thick. The sill forms the northwest limb of the north east-trending New Lake Basin. The north-west striking Columbus quartz diabase dike of Keweenawan age intrudes the Keewatin and Nipissing rocks. Two vein systems are important: No. 1 vein system strikes north and dips 70º; No. 2 vein system strikes north-northwest and dips 80º east-northeast. Silver-cobalt production is restricted to the vicinity of the Upper-Nipissing-Keewatin contact. Base metal mineralization such as pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena occurs as disseminated sulphides in the interflow sedimentary bands. 1960-64:mining operations during the period were from Christopher property but ore of appreciable quantity was hoisted from Cobalt Load shaft in conjunction with the Christopher shafts.

Mineralization Comments

Aug 02, 2017 (A Wilson) - The no 1 Vein System had a horizontal length of about 1300 ft.; extending about 500’ vertically. The No. 2 vein system has a horizontal length of about 1000 ft., and extends 400 ft. vertically. The grade (1951-56) was 16.7 oz./t; cobalt 9.8 lbs./ton; nickel 2.3lbs./ton and copper 1.8 lbs./ton. during 1989, 11581 tons of ore, containing 156,343 ounces of silver were hoisted to surface exclusively from stopes above the 1330 –ft. level in the Cobalt Lode area.
