Exploration History

Exploration and development commenced about 1906 and was intermittent until the 1960s. At the Crescent, early surface exploration uncovered silver-cobalt mineralization in calcite veining. Four shallow prospecting shafts were sunk on the veins. An adit from near the shore of Kitt Lake was driven into the diabase ridge with the intent of intersecting the downward extent of the mineralization. A vertical winze was sunk from the adit level down 250 feet, where a second level was opened. A total of 1450 feet (442 m) of drifting and crosscutting was completed on the 2 levels (Bray 1953).

Geology Comments

Dec 22, 2011 (D Guidon) - The workings of both properties are located near the north contact of a near-vertical Nipissing diabase dike that cuts Cobalt Group sedimentary rocks. The group’s Lorrain Formation sedimentary rocks are composed of arkose. The diabase dike is about 100 m wide in the vicinity of the Edison and about 120 m wide at the Crescent. The dike dips at about 75 to 80 degrees to the north. The geology of the deposits is described in Born and Hitch (1990) and Born and Burbidge (1997). Pits on the Crescent were found at 582673E 5246126N, 582358E 5246026N and 582396E 5246056N. A sample of calcite in a diabase host contained abundant erythrite and possibly some very fine disseminated pyrite. Assay results for the sample were 2 ppm silver and 1 ppb gold. Calcite veins on the Crescent, roughly parallel to the northern diabase contact, host copper, cobalt, nickel arsenide mineralization. Veins are controlled by a fracture zone that strikes about 060 degrees. The Main Vein ranges from 1 to 7 m wide and the parallel Chimney Vein, ranges from 1 to 3 m wide. Mineralization includes smaltite, cobaltite, gersdorffite, erythrite, annabergite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and niccolite. A test of hand picked ore contained 7.92% cobalt, 7.72% nickel, 0.25 ounce per ton silver and 0.87 ounce per ton gold. Grab samples contained up to 2.72 ounce per ton gold (Bray 1953).
