Exploration History

1919: Knight et al. (1919) reported that grab samples from a 2- 3 inch wide quartz-calcite vein assayed as much as 0.02 ounce of gold per ton. 1925: Gledhill (1925) reported that pyritic 'greenstone' intruded by syenite dikes assayed 0.19 ounce of gold per ton across mineable widths. 1946- 1947: Garthack Mining Co. Ltd. completed surface pitting, trenching, geological mapping, and diamond drilled 9 holes (The Northern Miner, March 4, 1948) totalling about 2,000 feet on 10 claims straddling the Garrison/Thackeray Township common boundary. Several of these claims were acquired from the Benbow Gold Syndicate. The best mineralized intersection yielded by this drilling was reported (The Northern Miner, December 4, 1947) to be a core length 4.2 feet long averaging 0.09 ounce of gold per ton. 1948: Garthack Mining Co. acquired 12 additional claims in the area and completed a magnetic survey. 1951: At this time the property consisted of 25 claims. Through November, 2,500 feet of diamond drilling was completed (The Northern Miner, November 15, 1951). 1978: Grab samples from the No.1 vein are reported (Jensen 1978) to average 0.01 and 0.02 ounce of gold per ton. 1985: What once constituted the Garthack Mining Co. claims were held by Kerr Addison Mines Ltd. as part of extensive land holdings in the area.

Geology

Province: Superior

Geological Age: Archean

Metamorphism Grade: Greenschist

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Geological mapping (Satterly 1949; Jensen 1978, 1982; Jensen and Langford 1985; Jensen and Baker 1986; Johnstone and Steele 1989, Baker et al. 1982; McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988) and recent geophysical surveys (OGS 1984) indicate the area to be underlain mainly by weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic grade) subaqueously deposited volcanic and interflow sedimentary and/or tuffaceous rocks of the (Archean) Kinojevis Group. These rocks form a monoclinal east southeast striking, steeply south dipping, and south facing succession which occupies part of the north limb of the east striking and east plunging Blake River Synclinorium. Felsic ('syenitic') to mafic ('dioritic') intrusive rocks also occur in the area.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - The Garthack occurrence is reported (Jensen 1978; assessment files, Resident Geologist's Office, Kirkland Lake) to consist of quartz-calcite veins and stockworks with varying orientations which are hosted by mafic volcanic rocks and dioritic intrusive bodies. Pyrite is also associated with porphyritic 'syenitic' dikes developed in 'greenstone'. Satterly (1949) reported that at least 5 vein systems (not all of which are documented to be anomalously auriferous) occur in the area. At least one vein system (possibly the No.1 'vein', which is reported by Satterly (1949) to be a 160 striking quartz vein stockwork consisting of veins up to 2 feet wide hosted by pyritic and chalcopyrite and specularite bearing silicified volcanic rock) has been traced on surface for 350 feet (Satterly 1949; The Northern Miner, August 21, 1947). The maximum exposed width of this vein system is reported to be 30 feet. Best channel samples (of unspecified length) from the area are reported to have averaged 0.12 ounce of gold per ton (The Northern Miner, March 4, 1948).
