Exploration History

1907: Miller (1907) reported that free gold could be panned from pyritic and variably chalcopyrite bearing quartz veins and quartz vein breccias. 1909: Baker (1909) reported that picked samples returned gold assays of no greater than about 0.20 ounce of gold per ton. 1918: Hopkins (1918) reported that low gold values were obtained from variably pyritic and limonitic banded chert, chalcedony, red jasper, and quartz 'resembling banded iron formation' on the south shore of Lake Abitibi between the Teddy Bear River and the Quebec border. 1973: Jensen (1973) reported that on island 524 SV, scattered pyrite and chalcopyrite blebs within quartz-calcite veins along brecciated fractures in altered volcanic rocks may assay as much as 0.01 ounce of gold per ton and 2.14% of copper. 1980: Noranda Exploration Co. Ltd. completed magnetic and VLF electromagnetic surveys in the area. 1981: Noranda Exploration diamond drilled 5 holes totalling 2,839 feet near gold occurrence. 1982: Noranda Exploration diamond drilled 2 holes totalling 399 feet and completed a VL electromagnetic survey. 1984: Noranda Exploration completed a 46 hole reverse circulation overburden drilling program totalling 3,321 feet and magnetic and VLF electromagnetic surveys. 1987: Noranda Exploration diamond drilled 9 holes totalling 7,204 feet. 1988: Noranda Exploration diamond drilled 4 holes totalling 2,621 feet.

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - Jensen (1978) reported that on island 524 SV, a 50 m wide 120 striking shear zone is developed in ultramafic (komatiitic) volcanic rocks of the (Archean) Stoughton-Roquemaure Group (Jensen and Langford 1985).

Within the shear are 15 m wide dikes and 1-2 m wide quartz-carbonate (ankerite) veins. The veins may contain 2-5% of pyrite and chalcopyrite as 1-20 mm size blebs. Miller (1907), Baker (1909), and Jensen (1973) reported that anomalously elevated gold (greater than 0.01 ounce of gold per ton) and copper (as much as 2.14%) tenors occurred in the area. Diamond drilling by Noranda Exploration Co. Ltd. during the 1980's also yielded numerous anomalously auriferous (assaying greater than 0.01 ounce of gold per ton) core sections of significant (greater then 1 foot) length within ultramafic and mafic volcanic rocks and felsic intrusive material.
