Exploration History

1906: Miller (1907) reported that the Mosher brothers prospected along the south shore of Lake Abitibi. 1909: Baker (1909) reported that near Point 48A on the south shore of Lake Abitibi, the Mosher brothers staked claims and excavated a 13 foot deep shaft on a 5-24 inch wide quartz vein containing pyrite and chalcopyrite which was hosted by pink granite. A picked sample from the occurrence is reported by Baker to have assayed 0.19 ounce of gold per ton. 1981: Carling Copper Mines Ltd. completed magnetic and VLF electromagnetic surveys. 1982: Samples obtained by Jensen (1982) contained only traces of gold.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Guidon) - Geological mapping (Jensen 1982; Jensen and Langford 1985; Jensen and Baker 1986; Johnstone and Steele 1989; Gupta and Johnstone 1987; Vagners and Courtney 1985; McClenaghan et al.1988, 1987; Steele 1988) indicates that the occurrence area is underlain mainly by weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic grade) southeast striking, steeply dipping, and southwest facing calc alkalic volcanic and/or tuffaceous rock of the (Archean) Hunter Mine Group. These supracrustal rocks occupy part of the south limb of a southeast striking syncline.

Dec 07, 2005 (C Salo) - Geological mapping (Jensen 1982; Jensen and Langford 1985; Jensen and Baker 1986; Johnstone and Steele 1989; Gupta and Johnstone 1987; Vagners and Courtney 1985; McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988) indicates that the occurrence area is underlain mainly by weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic grade) southeast striking, steeply dipping, and southwest facing calc alkalic volcanic and/or tuffaceous rock of the (Archean) Hunter Mine Group. Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (D Guidon) - The occurrence area is intruded by numerous dikes and is interpreted to be no more than several hundred metres from the margin of the (Archean) Lake Abitibi Batholith, a sodic affinity (trondhjemitic and tonalitic) composite felsic intrusion. Anomalous gold tenors are reported (Baker 1909, Jensen 1982) to be associated with irregularly developed north striking quartz-carbonate veins which vary from 5 to about 24 inches in width and which have associated with them pyrite and chalcopyrite. The veins are reported to be hosted by pink granite (probably dike material) intruding (calc alkalic) volcanic and tuffaceous rocks and green carbonate. Baker (1909) reported that a sample from the occurrence assayed about 0.19 ounce of gold per ton; Jensen (1982) reported that a grab sample from the same occurrence assayed only traces of gold.
