Exploration History

1922: R. Cryderman - staking. 1922-1923: Mining Corp. of Canada Ltd: stripping, trenching, sampling, DD-2-1131 ft. The claims were surveyed and a 5 foot wide shear hosting 'encouraging' gold values was discovered. 1925: C.W. Knight reported that on claim no. 10476, oxidized material from a vertically dipping shear developed within pillowed volcanic rocks containing quartz stringers up to 6 inches in width yielded gold when panned. Elsewhere on the claim, a massive pyritic mauve colored rock was exposed. 1982: Canadian Nickel Company Limited - airborne geophysics. 1985-89: Noranda Exploration Co. Ltd. (operator) and Freewest Resources Inc.: mapping, magnetic and VLF-EM surveys, soil sampling. 1986: DD-3-686.6 m, assays; 1987: DD-25-6914.89 m, assays. 1990: Noranda Exploration Company, Limited: DD-7-1919.0 m.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - Geological mapping (Satterly 1954; Jensen 1982; Jensen and Langford 1985; Jensen and Baker 1986; Johnstone and Steele 1989; Vagners and Courtney 1985; McClenaghan et al. 1988, 1987; Steele 1988) indicates that the Mining Corp. of Canada claims are within the east striking Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone and are underlain mainly by largely glacial drift covered weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) Archean volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Stoughton-Roquemaure Group and Porcupine-Destor Complex.

Lithology Comments

Jul 29, 2016 (R Degagne) - Stripping completed during the early 1920's revealed east to east northeast striking and vertically dipping pyritic and variably carbonate bearing and sericitic quartz stringer bearing schists from which gold may be panned. Chip or channel sampling completed in the 1920's is reported to have yielded assays as high as 0.16 ounce of gold per ton and surface samples of 0.09, 0.05 and 0.026 ounce of gold per ton across sampling lengths of 6.1, 8, and 32 feet, respectively. More recently, diamond drilling by Noranda Exploration Co. and Freewest Resources is reported to have intersected significant gold tenors. The auriferous Lightning Zone is reported to plunge westward, to be associated with a contact zone developed between mafic and ultramafic volcanic rocks along the Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone, to dip south 65-75 degrees, and to contain 5-30% of pyrite.

Mineralization Comments

Jul 29, 2016 (A Wilson) - In 1922, W. Emens collected 41 samples from the shear zone with gold assays reanging from nil to 0.16 oz/t Au; 33 samples were below 0.05 oz/t Au. The shear zone has a width of 4 to 7 feet. Emens collected an additional 56 samples for gold assay from a trench near the west boundary of the claim. Forty-eight of the samples ran nil to 0.13 oz/t, 7 samples ran 0.20-0.36 oz/t Au and 1 sample yielded 1.61 oz/t Au. Drill hole no. 89-29 is reported to have intersected 53.1 feet of material averaging 0.21ounce of gold per ton from a depth of 1,175 feet (The Northern Miner, January 23, February 13, 1989). Diamond drill hole no. 88-27 is reported to have intersected a 57.4 foot core length averaging 0.17 ounce of gold per ton at a vertical depth of 1,250 feet. Within this intersection, core lengths of 9.8, 2.8, and 4.1 feet are reported to have averaged 0.54, 0.51 and 0.53 ounce of gold per ton, respectively. The 1988 diamond drilling is reported to have explored a zone of altered (quartz-carbonate-pyrite) mafic volcanic rocks along 1,500 feet of strike and to a depth of 600 feet.

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - Stripping completed during the early 1920's revealed (Sutherland et al. 1923, Knight 1925, Gledhill 1925, Satterly 1954) east to east northeast striking and vertically dipping pyritic and variably carbonate bearing and sericitic quartz stringer bearing schists from which gold may be panned. The auriferous Lightning Zone is reported (The Northern Miner, January 15, 1990) to plunge westward, to be associated with a contact zone developed between mafic and ultramafic volcanic rocks along the Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone, to dip south 65-75 degrees, and to contain 5-30% of pyrite.
