Exploration History

1923-1937: C.H. Jacobs and T. O'Neill staked 5 contiguous claims in west central Holloway Township immediately west of the McDermott Gold Mines Ltd. claims. During this period, about 500 feet of overburden stripping was completed and a 5 by 7 by 22 foot deep shaft was excavated. The claims were brought to patent and were known as the O'Neill claims. The shaft was reported to be sunk on or near a pyritic felsic dike hosted by pyritic schist. Gold is reported to have been panned from rusty dike material and pyritic schist marginal to it. 1942: The O'Neill claims were acquired by A.W. Hennessey, J.T. Jaeger, and M. Kingston. 1947: By this time, F. Bailey (of Timmins) is thought to have purchased the Kingston interest in the claims. 1952: Satterly (1954) examined the property and recently stripped bedrock and sampled weakly pyritic dike material; this assayed 0.04 ounce of gold per ton. 1979: By this time, G. Hays (of Thornehill, Ontario) had inherited F. Bailey's interest in the claims, L.J. Hennessey (of Burlington, Ontario) had acquired the A.W. Hennessey interest, and the remaining interest had been purchased by J.E. Skene (of Mishawaka, Indiana). The property was sampled geochemically during the year. 1981-1987: Camflo Mines Ltd. (now American Barrick Resources Corp.) optioned the property (henceforth to be known by American Barrick Resources as the Hennessey Option and, subsequently as the Three Star claims) and completed magnetic, VLF electromagnetic, geochemical (humus) surveys, geological mapping and sampling, and DD-22 diamond drilling as part of exploration along the extension of the McDermott Deformation Zone. 1988-89: American Barrick Resources Corp.: 300 m level drift driven from Holt-McDermott Mine to Three Star and Worvest claim groups; drifts from 150 and 250 m levels driven to access ore on Three Star and Worvest claim groups; production from claim groups commenced late in the year. .

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (R Degagne) - Within claim no. 11009 and (contiguous to the west) claim no. 11312 (of the American Barrick Resources Worvest claim group) spatially associated with the Consular-Ben-Arch-McDermott Fault of Satterly (1952) and within the McDermott Deformation Zone of Workman (1986), the Holt-McDermott Mine auriferous zone constitutes ore on which production via the Holt-McDermott Mine shaft began in late 1989. Holt-McDermott type gold mineralization is described elsewhere in this compendium under the description of the Holt-McDermott Mine. Information in the exploration files, Resident Geologist's Office, Kirkland Lake, indicates that as for ore shoots in the Holt-McDermott Mine shaft area (within claim nos.11382 and 11383), high grade auriferous shoots which constitute the Three Star/Worvest deposit plunge to the southwest within the east northeast striking and steeply south dipping McDermott Deformation Zone. It is noteworthy in addition that gold mineralization of the Three Star/Worvest deposit is relatively more distal to the axis of the Porcupine-Destor Fault Zone (PDFZ) than is ore in the Holt-McDermott Mine shaft area. It is likely, therefore, that the country rock hosting the Three Star/Worvest deposit belongs to the (Archean) Kinojevis Group rather than to the (Archean) Porcupine-Destor Complex of Jensen and Langford (1985). If this is so, it would appear that the McDermott Deformation Zone of Workman (1986) represents a splay or similar structure radiating obliquely away from the PDFZ.

Lithology Comments

Aug 02, 2016 (R Degagne) - Geological mapping iindicates that bedrock in the area is largely glacial drift covered. Exposed bedrock consists mainly of weakly metamorphosed (greenschist or lower metamorphic facies) east northeast striking, steeply south dipping, and south facing subaqueously deposited tholeiitic basalt and interflow sedimentary rocks. Intrusive rocks known to occur in the area include felsic and lamprophyre dikes. A recent geophysical survey of Holloway Township failed to detect any anomalous bedrock conductors in the area.

Mineralization Comments

Aug 02, 2016 (A Wilson) - Assays returned from samples collected by A.W. Hennessey in 1979, from claim 12314 returned values of 0.002 oz/t Au to 0.005 oz/t Au from chip samples of the walls of the shaft. The southwest corner of the shaft returned an assay of 0.04 oz/t Au. Assays from an adjacent trench returned 0.05 oz/t Au and 0.01 oz/t Au. The best assays from the 1984 diamond drilling returned values ranging from 0.04 oz/t Au to 0.29 oz/t Au. DDH Mc-84-59 returned a best assay of 0.058 oz/t Au over 9.82m.
