Exploration History

Township: Shaft is now within town of Goderich with mine workings beneath Lake Huron. 1866: The first North American discovery of a solid salt bed occurred in Goderich, Ontario, when Samuel Platt struck salt while drilling for oil.

Notes: Mine tour for MINES staff - attended by the Regional Resident Geologist, District Geologist and NE GIS Data Specialist from the Southern Ontario RGP office. Discarded drill core and rock samples were collected. Rock samples were collected from stratiform salt layers and recrystallized salt dikes.
