Feb 27, 2017 (A Wilson) - Marl was dredged from Wilder Lake during the years 1903 to 1919 by the national Portland Cement Company. The marl was excavated by floating dredge and delivered to the plant at Durham by rail. Wilder lake occupies an area of 100 acres, and except for a small part of the northwest end the marl has been mostly removed.

Feb 27, 2017 (A Wilson) - Wilder Lake marl is of fair quality. A 7.5 foot section at the northwest end of the lake analysed 85.7% CaCO3, 2.4% MgCO3, 0.11% Fe2O3 and 0.92% insoluble. Natural grain size is 76% finer than 325 mesh; 54% finer than10 microns. The crude marl contains 64.5% water; 590 pounds of dry marl can be extracted from one cubic yard of the crude.
