Access Description: The Mond Quartz Quarry area is located approximately 20 km west of Sudbury, in the northwest of Denison Township. The area is crosscut by two east to west trending main roads: the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 17) and highway 658. Approximately 4 kilometers west of Whitefish, County Road 4 (also known as Fairbank Lake Road) turns north off of Highway 17. Access to the quarry is assumed to be via gravel road turning east off Fairbank Road approximately 3.0 kilometres north of the Worthington - Fairbank Road intersection. (OFR 6109, p.1,2)
1880: Henry Ranger - discovered copper on this property, pitting. 1887: R. McConnell – property patented. 1899-1914: Mond Nickel Company – quarry opened on large quartz vein. Material used for siliceous lining of converters at the Victoria smelter. 1887: The claims were patented by R. McConnell. 1899: The property was acquired by the Mond Nickel Company which later opened up a quarry on a large quartz vein. This has been mined to some extent to provide the silicious lining of converters at the Victoria smelter.
