Lithology Comments

Mar 30, 2012 (R Corcoran) - The basal Sudbury Intrusive Complex contact at Kirkwood strikes east-west and dips steeply to the south. The basal norite is medium-grained and commonly sheared at and adjacent to the contact. The country rocks are dominated by Elsie Mountain Formation, comprising metamorphosed mafic volcanic rocks with intercalated metasedimentary and volcanic rocks, and minor schistose damage zones related to the SIC contact shearing. An east-trending quartz diorite dyke occurs south of the norite contact within a zone of Sudbury breccia, which parallels the norite contact. Discrete zones of Sudbury Breccia spatially associated with barren pods of quartz diorite occur throughout the property, and are a feature common to the highly productive Frood-Stobie properties to the west. East-west oriented shearing, resulting in relatively thin mylonitic belts has been observed on the property.
