Exploration History

1884: T. Frood discovered the showing. T. Frood and A.J. Cockburn staked the property and transferred the title to J.H. Metcalf and W.B. McAllister, who in turn transferred it to the Canadian Copper Company. J. Stobie and R. McConnell staked the Stobie mine property and sold them to the Canadian Copper Company. 1886: Stobie mine began production. 1899: Frood property was drilled and a shaft sunk on the ore body. 1900: Frood mine began production. 1903: Frood mine closed due to difficulties in separation and processing the ore. 1913: Frood mine reopened, shafts 1 and 2 were deepened. 1914: Frood mine closed again due to issues with ore processing. 1924: Inco resumed exploration on the property and sank shaft 3. 1926: Frood production resumed. 1929: Mond Nickel Company and Inco merged. 1936: open pit was opened. 1948: Stobie underground mine reopened and connected to the Frood workings. 1952: Frood open pit closed and full underground operations resumed. By 1968, underground shafts 4 and 5 were operational. Shafts 6 to 9, all located on the Stobie property were completed by 1969. 1999: Shaft 3 (Frood) was officially shut down. Headframe was removed in 2005. Production continued through the Stobie infrastructure. Production information captured in Copper Cliff No. 1 (MDI41I06NE00003 ).
