Exploration History

1900: Parsons assay of mineralized quartz contained 0.14 oz. Au ($2.80) per ton and 0.32 oz. Ag ($0.15) per ton; 1901: W.G. Miller wrote about the gold on Emerald Lake which was said to have been found in the loose state in grains of considerable size, mixed with sand, in a small cav, or so-called vug near the water’s edge. Rock was blasted out here at different points, but we saw no signs of the precious metal in the quartz in which the openings had been made. Considerable pyrite, some of which is in well-defined cubes, occurs in these openings. 1909: Goclen Rose Mining company was incorporated with head office in Sudbury and a capital stock of $500,000.00; Little work was done on the property until 1915, when about 8 men were employed during the open season, trenching, open-cutting and test-pitting was done and a 6-foot hardinge mill and amalgamation plates were installed for the extraction of the gold. In the following summer, some work was done, and in addition to trenching a shaft was sunk to a depth of 9 m. The remains of the old mill and a large vault for storing the gold recover may still be seen on the shore of Emerald Lake. 1909: Golden Rose Mining Company; little work was done on the property until 1915, when about 8 men were employed during the open season. Trenching, open-cutting and test-pitting was done and a 6-foot Hardinge mill and amalgamation plates were installed for the extraction of the gold. Following summer some work was done and in addition to trenching, a shaft was sunk to a level of 30 ft. 1927: Afton Mines Limited – 30 men engaged in deepening the shaft to 100 ft. and in crosscutting and drifting; some diamond –drilling was also done on the hill I in the vicinity of the mine. During the summer of 1934 further drilling was done on the surface to check the former records and in March 1935, a start was made in deepening the old shaft to 450 feet. Up to the present time at least 12 DD were sunk from the surface.5 m; and about 300 m east of the shaft, a 2-compartment; a considerable amount of drilling has been done from the underground workings and about 1500 ft. (450 m) of drifting. Has been done from the underground workings, and about 1500 ft. of drifting and crosscutting has been completed on the second and third levels. 1936: construction continued throughout 1936 at which time a total of 601.m of drifting, 478.2 m of crosscutting and 79 m of raising were completed. The mine closed on September 30, 1941. At that time, a 3-compartment vertical shaft had been completed to a depth of 228.5 m; and about 300m east of the shaft, a 2-compartment shaft winze at 43°. At that time, the company had raised 145,589 tons of ore containing 43,359 oz. Au ($1,661,087.00) and 8296 ounces of silver for a value of $3,377.00. 1953-55: geological, magnetic and electromagnetic surveys; DD-9-789.3 ft. and DD-3- 988.8m by Abex Mines Limited.in1956
