Point Location Description: Shaft

Location Method: Conversion from MDI

Access Description: This consists of the north half of section 13 in Thompson twp., about 330 acres, situated one mile east of Hwy 17 at a point 9 1/2 miles northwest from the town of Blind River on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Hwy 17 North Bay to Sault Ste. Marie, is made up of two lanes of concrete but the road leading east from it to the property at McGillivary's farm is suitable only for trucks or wagons except in dry weather. At a point 1 1/2 miles on this side road another trail or winter road leads north to the shaft a distance of 1/4 mile. The shaft is located in J.A. Montague's report of June 15th, 1907 as being 200 ft. west ofthe east boundary of the Laziert Location and about 800 ft south of its north boundary. Both those side roads could be converted into good all-weather truck roads by the addition of a few loads of gravel, after grading.

Exploration History

1906: Shaft 130 feet deep, about 250 feet of lateral work at the 117 foot level. Production of 120,000 lbs of copper from 1500 tons of ore by Northern Ontario Consolidted Copper Co. Camp and mine buildings were erected during 1906-1907 but a forest fire in 1907 destroyed them all and due to a fall in the price of copper to 7 cents, the mine was never re-opened. 1951-52 3 d.d. holes by Strathallan Enterprises. 1954 283 feet of d.d. in 10 holes by Parkway Mines Ltd. 1956 D.d. and underground examination of old workings by Bar-Fin Mining Corp. Ltd.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (G Bennett) - Thearea is underlain by state, greywacke and conglomerate of the Gowganda Formation of the Cobalt series of sediments. They strike west to northwest and dip flatly south at 5 to 15 degrees. They are intruded by diabase of Keweenawan age which is represented locally by a pink aplite. It contains fine quartz and plagioclase and small pink intrusive is ubiquitous in the shaft area mineraization occurs. In fact the amount of metal present seems to be in direct proportion to the amount of intrusive.

Dec 07, 2005 (P Beach) - Quartz sulphide veins cut Gowganda sediments. Veins strike N75E and dip 75S. Two parallel veins are known, 600 feet apart. Mining operations were conducted on the S vein. Near the shaft, the vein was exposed for a length of 150 feet, and may extend for a total length of 850 feet E of the shaft. The vein width ranges from 1 to 20 feet, and the average width is about 10 feet. Assay results from core samples ranged from 1.82% Cu over 3.2 feet to 9.27% Cu over 1.9 feet. Sampled sections ranged in width from 0.6 to 4.8 feet (File SSM-118) (ODM 1969 MRC 12 P 67).
