Exploration History

1953:Airborne MAG and scintillometer surveys by Technical Mine Consultants Ltd. 1956-59: Geological, geophysical surveys, drilling. No. 1 shaft to 1836 ft. No. 2 shaft to 1250 feet. The shafts are connected by an incline 2733 feet long. The mill was rated at 3000 t.p.d., and began operations in Feb. 1958. In 1958 reserves were estimated at 4280000 tons 2.16 lbs. U3O8 per ton after 10% dilution. By agreement between Northspan and Algom the Panel workings were extended into Algom's Quirke property. 1961: Mine closed. 1977: The Panel Mine was part of Rio Algom's Phase 2 expansion. The mine was reactivated. The mill rate was 2,990 tonnes per day. 1979: Commercial production commenced in November averaging 2419 tons of ore per day with an average grade of 1.2 pounds U3O8 per ton. A total of 394,000 pounds of U3O8 were produced.

Date: Aug 20, 1999

Geologist: G Bennett

Notes: The mineralization occurs in a zone 12 feet thick, which strikes N75W and dips 14S. As all the ore lies under Quirke Lake, it was necessary to establish the shafts on islands in Quirke Lake. No. 1 shaft, a six compartment production shaft, was sunk from an island close to the north shore of the lake and connected to it by a causeway. This shaft was put down to 1 102 feet but is now being extended to 1 800 feet. No. 2 shaft, a three compartment ventilation and service shaft, is situated on a small island in Quirke Island and has been sunk to 1 250 feet. The shafts are connected by a partly inclined drive 2 733 feet long. A mill to handle 3 000 tons per day has been constructed and began operating in December 1957.
