Exploration History

The property was staked in 1953 on the basis of geology, by prospectors for the Preston East Dome and Technical Mines Consultants companies. Algom Uranium Mines Ltd. was formed to explore this ground. A shaft was completed at a depth of 890 feet in 1955. A mill rated at 3, 000 tons per day was constructed and milling commenced in January 1957. In 1960, Algom Uranium Mines Ltd., along with other companies with controlling interests in the area amalgamated to Rio Algom Mines Ltd. In 1961 the shaft was deepened to 1780 feet to provide access to 3 new levels. A thorium recovery unit with a capacity of 150 to 200 tons a year was constructed. In 1964, production of yttrium concentrates from waste liquors began. In 1966, a 150 ton per year uranium refinery was completed. Nordic mill capacity increased to 3700 tons per day. 1968: Milling operations ceased. 1970: Mining operations phased out.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (G Bennett) - The Nordic mine is on the south limb of the Quirke Lake trough. The conglomerate ore body has been outlined along its easterly strike for a distance of 6 000 feet near the surface. It is a single, sheet-like bed, raking northwesterly, with a uniform dip of 17N, and an average width of 10 feet. Near its eastern end the orebody is about 40 feet above the pre-huronian basement; is rests unconformably on the basement rocks at the western limit. The depth of the ore below surface is 50 feet at the south boundary of the property and 2 000 feet at the north boundary. Beds of submarginal grade have been found above and below the main body. A bed 50 feet thick, reported to have an average of about 0.05 percent U3O8, lies above the main body, and is ranked as possible ore; the extent of this bed is uknown. Diabase dykes of the Keweenawan type cut the Mississagi rocks. An ore zone containing chloritic rock was found beside a diabase dyke. It is contigious with the conglomeratic ore and apperas to have replaced the conglomerate, as remnants of pebbles have been found in the chloritic rock. This type of rock presents milling difficulties. The Nordic deposit differs from the Quirke in that at the Nordic most of the quartz pebbles in the conglomerate are larger, the grade is higher, and the uranium to thorium ratio is about 6 to 1, which is higher than that of the Quirke deposit. Only one fault, with a small displacement, was encountered.

Dec 07, 2012 (P Beach) - The Nordic ore body is situated in a shallow valley structure on the south limb of the Quirke Lake trough. The Huronian units, over which a dip and scarp topography has developed, strike east and dip 10-25 N. The depth of the orebody below the surface is 50 feet at the south end of the property and 2000 feet at the north boundary The uraniferous conglomerates are confined to the basal 200 feet of the Matinenda Formation of the Elliot Lake Group. The orebody strikes N8OE and has an average dip of 17 N. The average thickness is 9.5 feet. The basal conglomerate reef is composed of poorly-sorted quartz pebbles set in an impure quartz matrix. Here grades up to 0.08 % U308 and thicknesses up to 15 feet are found. The Nordic reef is the major reef. It consists of fairly well-rounded. well-sorted, densely-packed. quartz pebbles. Another, unnamed, reef occurs 20 feet above the Nordic reef. It has similar composition.
