Exploration History

1953: Surface trenching and sampling, geol. survey, airborne scintillometer survey An extensive diamond drilling program begun in 1953 involved 87 548 feet in 203 holes drilled at 200-foot intervals. 1955: A shaft was sunk to 861 feet. A 77 foot adit was added. 1956: A 3 000 ton mill was built and production began in September 1956. In 1960 a second shaft, was started. On the formation of Rio Algom Mines Ltd., shaft sinking was stopped in January 1961. Total underground development included 74,747 feet of drifts and 19,924 feet of crosscuts. All this and previous work was by Algom Uranium Mines Ltd. 1965: Mine was dewatered and the waters were treated for recovery at the Nordic Mill. 1967: Production resumed from the No. 1 shaft. 1971: Operations at this mine ceased. Total development as of 1971 included 98,893 feet of drifts and 19,938 feet of crosscutting. All work by Rio Algom Mines Ltd.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2012 (G Bennett) - The Quirke group of claims was staked to cover a radioactive showing discovered by Manfred Johnson north of the Serpent River in Twp 150. The property extends from the north shore of Dunlop Lake in Twp 156 to central Quirke Lake in Twp 144. The eastern part of he property was partly mined from the panel mine. All Huronian formations from the Mississagi to the Gowganda are axposed on the property. These strike east-west and dip south at moderatly steep angles shallowing to the south.

Dec 07, 2012 (P Beach) - Uranium mineralization occurs within oligomictic quartz-pebble conglomerate of the Matinenda Formation. The ore zone outcrops at the north end of the property and reaches a depth of 1600 feet at the south end. In the vicinity of the deposit are a series of conglomerate horizons called the Upper Reef and the A Reef. In the A Reef, ore occurs as lenses of uraniferous quartz-pebble conglomerate interbedded with quartzite. The strike length is 7300 feet, the average thickness is 12 feet and the down slope length is 2000 feet.
