Exploration History

1916 Numerous trenches; a few small open-pits; inclined shaft sunk 70 feet with a few feet of drifting on the 50 foot level; 7 carloads of ore shipped from which 33 468 lbs of copper having a value of 8 564, were recovered. Work was carried out by Timmins Interests, under option from Cheney Copper Mines Ltd. 1928-29 Shaft sunk to 150 feet; 1625 feet of drifting and 860 feet of cross-cutting on 150 foot level. 2514 feet of surface d.d. in 7 holes by Sudbury Basin Mines Ltd. 1955-56: 4723 feet of surface d.d. in 8 holes by Sudbury Basin Mines Ltd. 1960 MAG, EM surveys by Rothsay Mines Ltd. 1966-67 Mine rehabilitated, approximately 3500 tons of material shipped to mill of Copper Concentrators Ltd. in Twp. 168. In 1989, Blue Heaven Resources Corp. conducted field work including trenching, sampling and diamond drilling. Diamond drilling included 14 holes were drilling on the adit zone vein zone No. 1 totaling 2, 736 feet.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (G Bennett) - The area is generally underlain by sediments of the Gowganda Formation consisting of conglomerate, greywacke, argillite, quartzite and a few thin bands of impure limestone. These sediments have been intruded by dikes and sills of Nipissing diabse and Olivine diabase. The sediments dip gently to the north and north east with the Nipissing quartz diabase generally following the strike of the sediments but cutting steeply across the dip. The later Olivine diabase cut across the strike of the sediments and the veins. The following description of the geology of the property is taken from a report of Mr W. H. Gross dated June 8th, 1955 and quoted in its entirity. 'The rocks in te vicinity of the mine consist of conglomerates and thin interbedded quartzites of the Gowganda Formation. The sediments strike north west and dip gently northeast, and have been intruded by steep dipping dykes and flat sills of diabase. The quartzite in the mine area are thin, lens-like and irregular and could not be traced for any distance and it is doubtful if they influence the ore picture. The argillites occur noth of the mine; they are high in the sedimentary sequence and therefore have little bearing on the geology of the main vein. On the Cheney the conglomerates have a dark grey argillaceous looking matrix. South of the mine (representing the rocks to be found at depth in the mine) the matrix, on the whole seems to have a more siliceous composition. This feature may have a bearing on the characteristics of the vein with the depth. The copper values on the Cheney occur in a quartz vein that strikes generally east-west and dips 45-60 degrees south. The vein is extremely variable in its character. It may vary from a complex stock work of quartz veins over a width of up to seventeen feet of may range down to a single thin stringer. The vein contain good copper values in two places; one is near the shaft, the other about 2500 feet west of the shaft.

Dec 07, 2005 (P Beach) - A quartz vein system cuts Gowganda sediments and Nipissing diabase and is cut by later diabase dikes. The vein zone strikes E and dips 45-60 S. The zone has been traced for 4000 feet on strike, and by drilling to a depth of 460 feet. The width ranges from a few inches to 17 feet and averages about 5 feet in width.

Geologist: G Bennett

Notes: The zone has been traced for 4000 feet on strike, and by drilling to depth of 460 feet. The width ranges from a few inches to 17 feet, and averages about 5 feet in width. Reserves estimated at 39 405 tons averaging 3.97% Cu, contained in two shoots. The main shoot near the shaft contains 30 570 tons, grading 3.9% for length of 192 feet and for an average width of 5.8 feet. A smaller lens W of main shoot contains 8835 tons grading 4.2% Cu for a length of 60 feet and an average width of 4.5 feet. Approximately 3500 tons were mines in 1967.

Date: Mar 04, 2000

Geologist: P Beach

Notes: Rothsay Mines, Limited (Cheney Mine) . In the latter part of 1966 Rothsay Mines, Limited, entered into an agreement with Copper Concentrators, Limited. The old Cheney Mine workings were rehabilitated in 1966, and early in 1967 some copper-bearing rock was mined. Approximately 3,500 tons of this material was trucked to the mill of Copper Concentrators, Limited, in Township l68. Some of the material was stockpiled at the mine site. Operations ceased in April. In September the stockpile remained at the mine site. Chalcopyrite and pyrite occur in a quartz carbonate vein system cutting Gowganda conglomerate. The vein system strikes easterly and dips 45 to 60 S. The width of the vein system varies from about 2 feet to 17 feet, but in the vicinity of the mine the average width is 4 feet to 6 feet. Prior to the recent operations described above, the deposit was estimated to contain 13,455 tons grading 5.6% Cu above the 150-foot level.2 ODM 1968 MP 17 P 5
