Exploration History

In 1926-27 the discovery of Ag-Pb-Zn ore was discovered in the southeastern part of Jollineau township. The shwing was discovered by Angus Bussineau of Sault Ste. Marie. The Bussineau proprty was taken over in 1927 by the Canadian Exploration Survey. Ranger Lake Mines Ltd., was organized to acquire and develop the property supervised by B.F. Hoyt. A permanent camp was erected and considerable explortory work was done before operations were discontined in 1927. In 1949 Sault Lead Zonc Mines Ltd completed 10 diamond drill holes that resulted in 1701 feet of drilling In 1951 Crwshore Patricia Gold Mines completed a 8 hole diamond drill program with 1, 505 feet of drilling. In 1968 Green Point Mines Ltd., and Taylor, S., Warren, W.J. completed 4 diamond drill holes with 1502 feet of drilling.

Geology Comments

Jul 12, 2010 (A Pace) - The deposit occurs near the west margin of a batholithic mass of pink granite. Near by are bodies of pre-Huronian gneiss which have been intruded by the pink grnatie. Both the gneiss and granite are cut by diabase dikes. Mineralization occurs along a shear zone in a highly altered diabase dike lying within the granite. The zone strikes N40 degrees -45 degrees W dips 75 degrees SW and exposed at intevals for 1600 feet. The shearing involves a width of 8 to 10 feet at the southeast end of the zone where the diabase has been converted to a soft, chloritic schist, whereas to the northwest it narrows down to a seam. The diabase dikes range in width from 15 feet at the northwest end 60 to 70 feet toward the southeast. Margins are least affected by shearing, marked by chilled contacts, porphyritic texture and partial assimilation of the adjoining pink granite. Mineralization in the shear zone consists of quartz veins 7 feet in width with patches of the following sulphides 1) Argentiferous galena 2) zinc 3) pyrite 4)arsenopyrite 5) chalcopyrite. Galena and zinc blende are by far the most plentiful other sulphides occurring in minor quantities. The galean occurs as lenses and stringers from one half to 4 inches in width and as disseminated crystals in the schist. Subsequent movement has sheared and fractured the sulphide lenses allowing cracks to be filled with veinlets of calcite. The were 6 sections ranging from A-F that were worked on by Ranger Lake Mines. The 6 sections were located along the main shear zone identified in the area of the showings and is exposed for 250 feet. Section B is a shaft sunk to 30 feet in the shear zone cutting the lenses of sulphides. A sketch illustrating the 6 sections can be located from ODM 1928 Part 3 page 62-65. A selected sample of solid galena from section A was submitted to Provincial Assay Office with results Ag 42.75 oz/ton and Pb-56.70%. Highlights from the drill results conducted by Crowshore Patricia Gold Mines in 1951: C-1- 16 feet of highly sheared and fractured diabase-fault gauge with localized sphalertie and galena-Pb-0.72%, Zn-1.15% Ag-0.60oz/ton. C-2- 3.1 feet of clayey material, carbonate and quartz with strong galena, and sphalertie Pb-0.19% Zn-1.48% Ag-0.10oz/ton and 4.3 feet of disseminated galena, sphalerite and pyrite Zn-1.28%. C-3-28.5 feet of altered sheared diabase and carbonate rock, contains 50% spharlertie, 5% galena, Pb-4.48%, Zn-13.88% and Ag-3.24oz/ton. C-4-29.2 feet fault zone complex of sheared diabase breccia clay gauge strong sphalerite in brecia Zn-1.63% and 1.5 feet brecciated zone, strong galena and sphalertie Pb-3.29%, Zn-2.74% and Ag-1.78 oz/ton. C-6- 41.5 feet of faulted and brecciated zone and massive diabase Pb-0.14% , Zn-3.65% and Ag-0.24oz/ton C-7-56.5 feet of numerous quartz stringers, highly silicified, pyrite in fractures. Sulphides and galena fairly strong Pb-2.26% Zn-4.44% Ag-4.38 oz/ton. 35 feet fine grained feldspar porphry fractured in places Zn-1.89% and 8 fee of silicied massive diabase Zn-1.02% and 1.17%. Sample obtained by a prospector at the showing was sent out by the staff of the Sault Ste. Marie Resident Geologist Program to the Provincial GeoLabs. The samples returned asssays of Cu-0.08%, Pb-0.04%, Zn-0.24% and Au-0.04 oz/ton.
