Notes: During 1972, a molybdenum-copper-uranium prospect near the east boundary of Gaudette Township on the Whitman Dam Road was re-activated by Artisan Mining and Milling Co. Ltd. It is an old prospect on land leased from the Algoma Central Railway. During the Second World War, minor amounts of hand-cobbed molybdenum ore were extracted from an open-cut as an emergency war measure, and minor diamond drilling was done at that time to determine whether further devel-opment was warranted. In 1948, Alur Mines Limited re-examined the pro-pect for uranium by trenching and diamond drilling. The recent work by Artistan Mining and Milling Company Limited involved installation of a very small portable crushing plant and tables which were used to treat additional material. The plant failed to produce suitable concentrates and has been removed. The prospect is in paragneiss extending eastward from the Archean Goulais River metavolcanic and metasedimentary belt. At the prospect, the paragneiss has a gentle dip to the northeast of less than 20 degrees and is slightly folded into an open anticline plunging in the same direction. A diabase dike with a NW strike is present on the east side of the prospect. Three distinct, but apparently related, types of mineralization are present. A qtz lens up to 20 feet thick and several hundred feet long is conformable with the gneiss. The coarse white qrtz contains some feldspar crystals and patches of molybdenite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. An unknown quantity of this vein has been mined by open-cut methods, so that it is now exposed only in a cut facing southwest, and capped by gneiss. Surrounding the vein, the gneiss on both sides is mineralized by up to 20 % pyrite for a thickness of at least 15 feet. Traces of sooty pitchblende were located by the writer in vugs in this material, but most of it contains only barren pyrite. The writer considers this zone to be greisen. (ODM 1974 MP 57 p 89-90).
