Exploration History

There is no work recorded for this portion of Laird Township (the township was withdrawn from staking in 1980). This silica site is relatively close (on the mainland) to the East Neebish Island Dominion Mines and Quarries Ltd. silica site. Quartzite was extracted from this quarry intermittently from 1916 to 1924 and was sent to Buffalo, New York for the production of ferrosilicon.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (G Bennett) - Refer to Geology of Bar River silica quarry. The quartzite is thickly bedded, medium to coarse grained with thin pebbly interbeds and is mottled purplish to creamy white in colour. Mottled bands and spots of hematitic alteration are common and pale green reduced zones are locally pitted and vuggy with small quartz crystals lining the cavities.

Site Visit Information

Date: Aug 03, 1999

Geologist: G Bennett

Notes: As one can not access East Neebish Island without a boat, it was decided to collect some representative samples from the road side outcrop. These samples of the Lorrain formation could be compared with other samples of the same formation collected elsewhere. The quartzite samples taken from this site (a single flat lying outcrop) were taken as type samples of the Lorrain formation in this area (near East Neebish Island). The quartzite is thickly bedded, mdeium to coarse grained with thin pebbly interbeds and is mottled purplish to creamy white in colour. Fracture controlled iron staining is common along joints. Mottled bands and spots of hematitic alteration are common and pale green reduced zones are locally pitted and vuggy with small quartz crystals lining the cavities.
