Exploration History

Iron formations were examined in the late 1800's in the south central part of Palmer township for iron ore potential. An exploration shaft 7.6m deep with minor tunnels and several pits were put in by Batchawana Mining Company in the area with no results reported. In 1964, Pall Mall Copper Mines Ltd., drilled 4 diamond drill holes totalling 1606 feet that intersected iron formation. Results from the drilling included 9 core samples from hole PM-11: 10 feet at 16.10% Fe and 0.02% Cu 11.5 feet of 16.155 Fe 16 feet of 21.45% Fe 14 feet of 19.10% Fe 20 feet of 21.25% Fe 20 feet of 20.20% Fe 14.5 feet of 32.05% Fe 19.5 feet of 28.98% Fe 14 feet of 13.60% Fe Results from 5 core sample from hole PM-12: 2.5 feet of 0.01 oz/t Au 9.5 feet of 23.35% Fe 14.5 feet of 28.20% Fe 15 feet of 27.28% Fe 6 feet of 31.05% Fe Results from 8 core samples from hole PM-13: 15.8 feet of 29.9% Fe and 0.06% Mn 3.7 fee of 0.01 oz/t Au 4 feet of 0.05 oz/t Au 21 feet of 26.25% Fe 13.2 feet of 24.33% Fe and 0.09% Mn 5 feet of 25.7% Fe 10 feet of 0.01 oz/t Au Results from 8 core samples from hole PM-14: 16.5 feet of 28.4% Fe 11 feet of 27.35% Fe 10 feet of 35.10% Fe 7.5 feet of 27.50% Fe 10 feet of 23% Fe 7.5 feet of 25.35% Fe 13 feet of 30.45% Fe 3.4 feet of 0.02 oz/t Au

Province: Superior

Subprovince: Abitibi

Terrane: Wawa-Abitibi

Geological Age: Early Precambrian

Geology Comments

Mar 22, 2012 (A Pace) - The surface geolgoy consists of volcanic rocks and tuffs, ranging in composition from ultramafic to felsic, siliceous siltstone, mudstone, greywacke, and banded iron formation. the composition of the banded iron formation is quite variable along strike, but the two major components are usually jasper and magnetite and hematite. Minor amounts of chert, hematite, muddy matrix and occasionally pyrite are present as well. Carbonatization is ubiquitous, with minor amounts of silicification, epidotization, mylonitization, potassic alteration, sericitization and serpentinization.
