Exploration History

1949-1950: Prospecting, trenching, 6 mile road from Highway 17 and a powerline were constructed. 1951: An adit was driven with 1628 feet of drifting along the dike and the fault. Ten crosscuts totalling 192 feet and a 164 foot raise were driven. 8 d.d. holes totalling 1100 feet were drilled from underground. All work was by Labine-McCarthy Uranium Mines Ltd. 1967: Prospecting by Primrock Mining and Explor. Ltd. 1969: 4 d.d. holes totalling 528 feet by Primrock Mining and Explor. Ltd.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (G Bennett) - The rock types include gneiss, schist, granite, syenite, pegmatite and diabase, all of Pre-Cambrian age. The usuall conditions for the occurance of uranium mineralization in this area are the presence of fractures in diabase, or along diabase contacts with gneiss or granite, or in the granite of such contact zones. The significant geological features of this general area consist of a series of sub-parallel diabase dikes which cut all other rocks of the area and which contain all of the pitchblende showings found to date. These dykes include, from north to south, the Roche Dyke, The Ranson Dyke, The Canagau Dyke, the Scottie Dyke and Austin Dyke. Each of the above dykes show one or more locations of radioactivity of recognizeable pitchblende. The Ranson Dyke has pitchblende showings along it for over one mile of strike, on the Falconbridge, Roche, Canagau, Ranwick (Ventures) Properties. The Canagau dyke has pitchblende showings along it for three-quarters of a mile of strike, on the Dickenson and Canagau properties. The McCarthy Group of claims appears to cover the probable extensions of the Ranson and Canagau dykes to the south-east. If tis correlation is correct, it adds about one more mile of uranium-bearing length to these two dykes. Major secondary structures, such as fault zones, have not yet been widely recognized in the area. One such fault, probably of considerable importance, is present on the McCarthy Group, while the presence of two or three others is suspected. Such north-trending regional faults are believed to be an mportant ore-controlling factor in this area.

Dec 07, 2005 (P Beach) - Mineralization occurs near the south contact of a Keweenawan diabase dike with Early Precambrian granite. This dike strikes N80W and dips steeply to the north. The McCarthy fault cuts off the dike to the east. The radioactivity is found mostly in a brecciated zone 12 to 15 inches wide within the diabase dike, parallel to and within several feet of the south contact. The fractures are filled with calcite-hematite gangue and pitchblende. This zone gave readings of four to five times background. (OGS 1983 MDC 25 P 48-49).
