Exploration History

Gold was discovered at the site some time around 1900. Between 1898 and 1926 an inclined shaft was sunk on the site to a depth of 65 feet. From 1925-1926 the property was owned by Pioneer Mining Corporation and from 1926-1930 by Cooper Gold Mines Limited. The company conducted at least 1346 feet of surface diamond drilling and trenching. The ore shoot at surface was not found to be continuous underground. In 1930 the property was taken over by Minto Gold Mines and reserves were estimated to be 6000 tons Au containing $10 per ton of gold at $20.50 per ounce. The mine was re-opened in 1938 and a two-compartment shaft was begun. A level was established at 50 feet and 210 feet of drifting and 100 feet of raising were done. Ore mined from the property was milled at the Minto mill. Exact production figures are not available for the Cooper gold mine. In 1969, Surluga Gold Mines drilled 5 ddh (1464 ft). Citadel Gold Mines stripped, trenched and mapped the area in the late 1980's.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The Cooper Mine lies at the eastern contact between the Jubilee Lake granodiorite stock and the Jubilee tuffs. These tuffs are fine-grained, massive feldspar-free and feldspar-rich units with a number of polymictic breccia units. Along the east side of the Jubilee Lake Stock the tuffs contain grains of biotite as individual grains and clusters of grains.
