Location

Township or Area: McMurray

Latitude: 47° 58' 20.81"    Longitude: -84° 43' 28.08"

UTM Zone: 16    Easting: 669830.3   Northing: 5315743.59    UTM Datum: NAD83

Resident Geologist District: Sault Ste. Marie

NTS Grid: 41N15NE

Point Location Description: Series of rock trenches northwest of Deep Lake

Location Method: Other Literature

Access Description: The actual location of the occurrence is imprecise. Drive south from highway 101along the Surluga Road to the Deep Lake turnoff (approximately 6 km) and then follow the Deep Lake trail for about 2 km. The trenches lie about mid way between Deep Lake and Sunrise Lake and is presumed to be in the sheared contact between a diorite apophyse and intermediate to felsic metavolcanics.

Exploration History

Pre 1952: prospecting and sampling by Tom Surluga. Subsequent work in the area has concentrated on the gold bearing quartz veins in the area.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Several radioactive mineral occurrences have been documented in the township. Some are believed to be related to the nearby Firesand River Carbonatite. Numerous radioactive lamprophyre dikes have been located adjacent to this intrusion. Purple fluorite, often considered to be an indicator of uranium and thorium mineralization has been found in several quartz-carbonate veins in the vicinity of the Deep Lake mine.

Lithology

Lithology Data
Rock Type Rank Composition Texture Relationship
Diorite 1 Diorite To Quartz Diorite Adjacent
Pegmatite 2 Host

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The occurrence has been described by Rupert as lying in a shear zone within the Jubilee tuffs near the margin of a diorite intrusion. Calcite and rusty carbonate replace much of the schist in the shear zone and there are narrow silicified sections. Previous descriptions suggest that the mineralization occurs in a pegmatite dike intruding a granitic complex. No pegmatites have been identified or mapped in the area.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - A sample from the showing reportedly assayed 0.10% U3O8. Ruper indicates that radioactivity is up to 4 times background across the width of the shear zone.
