Point Location Description: Decline shaft at Perkwakwia Point

Location Method: Field Visit with GPS

Access Description: Drive 11.7 km from the High Falls/Highway 17 turnoff to Michipicoten Harbour. From there it is an approximately 1 hour walk along the shore of Perwakwia Point to the showing from the Harbour fishery. Alternatively, a boat can be used to access the site from Lake Superior. The site is located approximately 0.5 km west of the light house on the point.



Exploration History

1860-66: J. W. Johnston - shaft sunk to a depth of 64 feet and open cut made on the bed; ore was reportedly shipped from the site between 1860-66. 1899: property acquired by Ely on behalf of Minnesota and Illinois interests. circa 1900: property passed into hands of Algoma Steel Corporation and was included as part of the Gros Cap Mining Location. 1916-18: Algoma Steel Corporation - mapping, testing, 2 ddh (318 m). 1962: Algoma Ore Properties Ltd. - mapping.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - There are two major northwest striking beds of banded iron rich chert on the peninsula. The most prominent band consits of banded hematite-chert ironstone with only traces of magnetite. The unit varies from 20-30 m in width.

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - A grab sample collected at the site in 1916 returned an assay of 86.8% Fe.
