Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - The diamonds were recovered from a point bar or other gravel deposits in the vicinity of the Dead River. In the immediate vicinity of the discovery there are no outcrops, the area is underlain by the Pleistocene deposits of the Michipicoten River. The rocks that outcrop closest to the occurrence consist of massive to schistose mafic metavolcanic rocks. An unusual ultramafic lamprophyre dike, the Nicholson ultramafic dike, is located approximately 1.2 km north north west of the site.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - Two diamonds were recovered from Pleistocene gravels of the Michipicoten River. They weighed 1.05 and 1.13 carats. One stone was identified as an octahedral twin diamond. Both diamonds are cloudy and contain inclusions of what is thought to be graphite. Alluvial sampling in the vicinity of the discovery recovered 12 chromite grains and 3 chrome diopside grains. A single G10 garnet was recovered in the vicinty of Driftwood Beach.
