Exploration History

The Algoma Steel Corporation Ltd. holds a leased parcel of land in the northwest corner of Nahwegezhic Twp. extending southward to Annibal Lake. In 1941 a major exploration programme that commenced on the Cowie Lake section of the iron range continued until 1944, and during this time the southern extension as far south as Annibal Lake was located. By 1944, 228 diamond drill holes had been put down on the iron range for a total of 39 324 m.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (G Bennett) - The iron range trends NNW, has a total length of nearly 20 000 feet, and has widths from a few feet to approximately 600 feet. The iron formation consists of magnetite-quartz (chert, jasper), amphibole and interlayered bands of volcanics and sediments. It is intruded by fesic and mafic dikes. Major part of the Goulais River (South) Iron Range within the Archean metavolcanics and metasediments.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (P Beach) - The iron range trends NNW, has a total length of nearly 20,000 feet, and has widths from a few feet to 600 feet. The iron formation consists of magnetite-quartz (chert, jasper), amphibole and interlayered bands of volcanics and sediments. It is intruded by felsic and mafic dikes. This iron formation is a major part of the Goulais River (South) Iron Range. The portions of the range of economic interest are in lenses with widths between 50 and 230 feet and have a total iron content of 25 to 40 %, averaging approx. 30 %. Reserves are sufficient to produce 1 million tons of pellets per year for about 30 years. Concentration tests indicate that grinding to 200 M produces a product of 60 % or more Fe with a ratio of 2.5 crude to 1 of ore. (ODM 1968 MRC 11 P 42).
