Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - The Copper Knob occurrence is located adjacent to a northwest trending fault. Probably related to this faulting are an abundance of hairline fractures which transect the host chert.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - This occurrence is part of the overall Shunsby deposit which is hosted in a banded iron formation within a mafic to felsic metavolcanic sequence which has been overturned. Felsic metavolcanics are above and mafic volcanics are below the iron formation which is divided into two main horizons. The structurally Upper Chert contains extensive amounts of a soft sediment chert conglomerate in thick bedded sequences whereas the Lower Chert is a mixed assemblage of more finely bedded cherts and argillites. Separating the two chert units is a volcanic sequence with a distinctive variolitic basalt. Intruding this supracrustal package are a number of dioritic plugs and dykes plus quartz feldspar porphyry dykes.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - Coarse grained pyrite with lessor amounts of chalcopyrite occur in discontinuous trails along fractures within the chert host rock. In areas of greater sulphide concentrations malachite with trace amounts of azurite occur on the weathered surfaces. It is suspected than the majority of the mineralization along the fractures has been remobilised from the lean iron formations during tectonism.

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - A grab sample taken by the OGS in 1970 returned an assay of 0.02% Cu.
