Access Description: This showing can be accessed by taking the Dore Main Haul Road, approximately 100 km west of Timmins, and then secondary logging roads into Coppell Township. A road goes down from the main haul road to Hanson Lake and the showing is easily accessible by canoe along the north shore.

Exploration History

1937: The ODM Annual Report 46 pt. first mentions that Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines Ltd. and the N.A. Timmins Corporation had prospecting parties working in the four townships that made up the Algoma Eastern Railway Company land grant; Dale, Newton, Coppell and Whigham Townships. This report, the subject of this file, mentions simply that gold discoveries were made in the vicinity of Hanson Lake. 1948: A small report by Sylvanite Gold Mines outlines prospecting in Coppell Township. 1950: Radiant Exploration Ltd. held a lease on the northern part of Coppell Township under agreement with Northern Ontario Lands Corporation Ltd. During this period Radiant Exploration conducted a program of exploration combining detailed geological mapping and prospecting. Radiant reported a pit on the east shore of Coppell Lake in a small bay that was said to contain visible gold. 1966: The Hanna Mining Company, as part of an agreement with the Algoma-Davis Timber Company, conducted an airborne electromagnetic survey and ground geological reconnaissance program over 6 patented townships of which Coppell Township was one. 1970-71: The U.S. Smelting and Refining Co. drilled a total of 3 holes into EM conductors in the northwest and southwest corners of Coppell Township. 2010: Red Pine Exploration Inc. completed an aerial electromagnetic and magnetic survey (T-6230 / 2.46831).

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (K Houle) - Pillow symbols on the map appear to indicate that tops are in a southerly direction.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (K Houle) - No description of the occurrence can be found except for a rough location to be found on Hanna Mining's map prepared by Nelson Hogg. The outcrop in the area appear to be pillowed to massive dacitic volcanics.

Notes: Very little first hand information exists on this showing and is commonly simply referred to as the Hollinger gold showing with reference to the general area to the north central portion of Hanson Lake. Investigating this area uncovered an old trench in an area of pillowed mafic to intermediate volcanics close to the remnants of an old cabin. The trench was located on the north side of a small hill within about 50m of the waters edge. The approximate dimensions of this trench are 4x15'. This trench was mostly filled with sand and it was not possible to determine what lay beneath. There are however several small exposures along points at the side of the trench which indicates siliceous volcanics. One exposure in the west end of the trench shows minor carbonate filled fracturing with associated minor pyrite and pyrrhotite. Also noted were very fine sulphide filled fractures. Some of the massive and pillowed ( avg 0.6m) volcanics contain trace < 1mm disseminates of pyrite.
