Location

Township or Area: Horwood

Latitude: 47° 55' 55.07"    Longitude: -82° 17' 30.59"

UTM Zone: 17    Easting: 403509.492   Northing: 5309545.778    UTM Datum: NAD83

Resident Geologist District: Timmins

NTS Grid: 41O16NW

Point Location Description: Trenches mapped by Gold Fields Canadian Mining, transferred to 1:20,000 air photos then to OBM

Location Method: Data Compilation

Access Description: At present the original trenches are best accessed by a series of logging roads from the Kenogaming - Penhorwood Main Haul Roads. The trenches are about 800m from the extreme end of these roads which in places have been partially washed out. Alternatively the trenches can be reached by a 1200m traverse from Horwood Lake near the Township line (overgrown).

Exploration History

1922 The Cambach Syndicate staked a number of claims over the showing and excavated a number of trenches in the shear zone. Only low gold values were obtained. 1934 Additional work by the Cambach syndicate consisted of coring four holes but without any great success. 1937 Cominco evaluated the showing and chip samples across the best mineralization returned assays of 0.68 g/t (0.02opt). 1983 Gold Fields Canada together with Darius Gold Mines as a joint venture partner carried out a VLF-EM and magnetic survey over the ground, mapped the area, and drilled one hole. Assay results for this work no longer exist.

Geology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - A number of small shear zones are confined to an epiclastic tuffaceous band and gold mineralization is confined to these zones.

Lithology Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - The rocks consist of fine and coarse grained, pillowed and massive basaltic flows. These flows are light in colour and may be either calc alkaline or Mg tholeiitic and are locally variolitic and glomeroporphyritic. Within a southeast trending band there are mafic volcanic breccias together with wackes and felsic tuffs, crystal tuffs to lapilli tuffs. The felsic volcanics are more common to the northwest. Alteration is confined to the band of tuffs, sediments, and breccias and characterised by fine grained magnetite, carbonate, sericite, hematite, and quartz tourmaline veins. The more intense alteration is centred on narrow shear zones.

Mineralization Comments

Dec 07, 2005 (S Fumerton) - Alteration zones are mineralized with disseminated pyrite and rare chalcopyrite which are concentrated closer to the quartz stringer veins.

Dec 07, 2005 (A Wilson) - A grab sample collected by the OGS returned 0.6 g/t Au.
